When do you need concrete cut instead of broken out?
Concrete cutting in El Paso means sawing straight lines through a slab or wall, or core drilling round holes, so you can take out a section, run a pipe or conduit through, or make room for new work without breaking up more concrete than you have to.
Usually something has to go through or come out of concrete that's already there, like a drain line under a garage floor, a cracked driveway panel or a patio edge sitting where new work has to go. The price moves with the surface and its thickness, how much steel is inside, whether it's a flat slab or a wall, and whether you want the concrete broken out and hauled or only cut. The schedule mostly turns on what might be inside the slab and on any paperwork your address calls for. The written estimate I give you lays all of that out, including what's in the price and what isn't.
How do you know a slab needs cutting?
One panel broken, rest fine
You see one section of the driveway or patio cracked, sunken or chipping while the panels around it still sit flat. That usually means the ground gave way under that one piece, and leaving it lets water get under the edges of the good panels next to it.
A line has to cross
A plumber or electrician needs a drain, pipe or conduit to pass under or through concrete that's already poured. A clean trench cut or a cored hole keeps the opening tight, while hammering through tends to crack the slab well past where you wanted it.
Old concrete in the way
A patio edge, a step or part of a driveway sits right where a new pour, a doorway or an addition has to go. A straight saw cut gives the new work a clean edge to start from, and putting it off usually means breaking out more later.

How we do concrete cutting
I start by looking at what we're cutting, a flat slab or a wall, and how thick it is, because that picks the saw. If the slab could have post-tension cables in it, the steel cables some slabs are poured around and then pulled tight, I ask for the building drawings, and the job may need a scan and input from an engineer before anyone cuts. Then we mark the lines, make the cuts and, if your estimate includes it, break out the panels, haul them off and leave clean edges for whatever comes next.
Most cutting is the first step of something else. When a cracked section comes out of a driveway or one gets widened, we can pour the new piece as part of concrete driveway building, and when a patio gets bigger or changes shape, the cut edge becomes the starting line for concrete patio construction.
Flat sawing for slabs
This is the walk-behind saw for driveways, patios and floors, and it suits taking out a panel or cutting a trench for a line. It's the most common cut on a house job.
Wall sawing
The saw runs on a track mounted to a vertical or steep surface, so it suits a doorway or opening through a concrete wall. It usually costs more per foot than flat cutting.
Hand sawing in tight spots
A hand saw reaches corners, edges against a wall and other places a big saw can't get to. It's slower, so we use it where it's the only clean way in.
Core drilling for round holes
A core drill makes a neat round hole so a pipe, drain or conduit can pass through a slab or wall. Cored holes are priced apart from saw cuts, so your estimate lists them on their own.

What happens when you call us about concrete cutting?
Here's how a cutting job runs from your first call to a cleaned-up site, so you know what you'll get at each step.
Call or send the form
Call (915) 265-1446 or send the form, and we set a time for me to come out. Tell us roughly what needs cutting so I can bring the right gear to look at it.
I measure and write it up
I look at the site, measure the cut and ask what it's for, since that decides the saw and whether the panels stay or go. You get a written estimate that says what's included and what isn't, so you can hold it up against other bids line for line.
Paperwork and marked lines
We line up any permit, inspection or drawings the job needs before the cutting date. Then we mark the cut lines on the concrete so you can see exactly where the saw will go.
Cut, break out, haul
Our crew makes the cuts and, if it's in your estimate, breaks out the concrete and hauls it off. You're left with straight, clean edges ready for the next step.
Why El Paso property owners call Formcraft El Paso Concrete Company for cutting
I write the estimate myself
I come out, look at the cut and write the estimate, and our own crew does the work, with me on site for any pour that follows. You're talking to the person who decides how your job gets done.
Learned the trade in El Paso
I framed houses for years, then learned concrete under a finisher here in El Paso and started this business in 2013. Thirteen years in, I'll tell you plainly when a cut won't fix the problem you're calling about.
Licensed and fully insured, every job
We're licensed and fully insured, which matters on a cutting job because nobody sees inside a slab until the blade is in it. Our work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee.
On a cutting job, the thing that matters most is agreeing on the scope before the saw starts, so call or send us the details and I'll come out and put it in writing.
Concrete cutting, street water and permits in El Paso
Here the permit questions on a cutting job tend to come from where the water and the cut end up. El Paso Water says a dewatering permit may be required when a project sends wastewater into the stormwater system, and that includes the street, so slurry from a cut near the curb is something we plan for before we start. Work in pavement under the city's Paving Cut Permit gets inspected after a call to the city on or before the work day before, with a paper copy of the approved permit and its drawing kept on site. The contractor pulling City of El Paso permits also has to file an application with the city every year. Whether your job needs any of this comes down to your address and where the cut is, and when it does, we handle the paperwork with whichever office covers you, the city, the county or the state in New Mexico.
The cutting calls we get around town are mostly a cracked driveway panel coming out, a line going under a garage floor or a patio edge making room for new work, and we see the same calls on jobs in Horizon City and Canutillo. Tell us before we cut where your own buried lines run, like a feed to a shed or yard lights, because Texas's underground damage prevention law doesn't cover lines that serve only you and sit only on your property.
Questions about concrete cutting in El Paso
How much does concrete cutting cost in El Paso?
Across the US, professional saw cutting of accessible 4- to 6-inch slabs usually runs about $4 to $10 per linear foot. That's the going rate for straightforward flat cuts, not our price, and thicker or reinforced slabs, wall sawing and cored holes all run higher. On a short cut, a trip or minimum charge can count for more than the footage, so your written estimate gives you your own number.
Does a concrete cutting price include removing the concrete?
Not always. Sawing and removing are separate jobs, and some cutters only make the outline or trench cuts and leave the panels where they lie. Breaking, lifting, hauling and disposal can cost more than the sawing, so our estimate says plainly which one you're getting.
Do I need a permit to cut concrete in El Paso?
You may need one if water from the cut reaches the street or the cut is in city pavement, as covered in the El Paso section above. We check your address and the layout at the estimate, before anything gets scheduled.
What is the best way to keep dust down when cutting concrete?
Keep water on the blade. OSHA says wetting the blade substantially cuts the dust from sawing concrete, so we cut wet, and it's a fair question to ask anyone you're comparing. The water turns the dust into slurry, and we settle with you before work starts where it gets collected and how it's hauled off.
How long does concrete cutting take?
The sawing itself is usually the shortest part of the job. Most of the time goes to what comes before and after it, like drawings or a scan if the slab may hold cables, any permit or inspection, and breaking out and hauling if that's included.
How do I get ready for a concrete cutting job?
Know where the cut goes, what surface it's in and about how long it is, and pull out any building drawings you have. Those tell me which saw the job needs and whether there could be steel or cables in the way. Call (915) 265-1446 or send the form when you have them.
Concrete work that often follows a cut
Concrete driveway building
When a cracked panel comes out or a driveway gets widened, we pour new concrete against the clean cut edge so the new section lines up with the old.
Concrete patio construction
Extending a patio or cutting back an old one? We plan the new slab's base and joints along with the cut, so the whole thing ties together.
